About Kerala

Get ready for your Kerala Getaway! “God’s Own Country”: Abundantly green, Kerala boasts of beautiful waterways and beach fronts along with wonderful hills.

Kochi, where the wedding is taking place, is the commercial capital of the state of Kerala. You can visit five-hundred-year-old synagogues, take a boat out to see the Chinese fishing nets and shop for trinkets and antiques in the same area.

Kochi has been influenced by Arab traders, Portuguese travellers (Vasco Da Gama landed in Kerala a little north of Kochi), the British and more recently by a boom in tourism.

There are large Hindu temples dotted around the state, many going back over a thousand years. The world’s richest temple Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple is in the city of Thiruvananthapuram further south of Kochi. Many large churches and mosques abound across the length of this state.

Kerala has a number of art forms that have originated here. Kathakali is probably the most well-known dance form but Theyyam, Mohiniyattam and Koodiyattam are some others. Kalaripayattu (said to be the inspiration for Karate) is both a martial art and also a performance act. At the sangeet we will have a short Kathakali performance and a Kalaripayattu performance to provide a flavour of the local culture.

Food in Kerala varies a lot because of the influence of the different ethnic groups that have interacted with the local populace over the years. The North of Kerala has unique non- vegetarian food (a Calicut biriyani is like no other). Traditional events like weddings usually have a multi-course vegetarian spread (which is what we will have at the wedding). Breakfast includes idlis, dosas , appams, puttu etc. So be prepared to indulge yourself!

Ayurveda in Kerala goes back many years and has become extremely popular as an alternative medical approach . In addition, Ayurveda centres offer a rejuvenation therapy solution to help you relax and unwind.

Kerala has incredible backwaters. Kumarakom and Alleppey are the more famous tourism locations but many newer ones have also opened up . Kovalam is a famous beach near Thiruvananthapuram. Varkala and Calicut are also beach front areas.
